Lee Bontecue

Lee Bontecou was a female American sculptor and printmaker, a pioneer figure in the New York art world. Bontecou's work has been, for the past 4 months, a constant source of inspiration.

There is something about the graphic shapes and the incorporated sculptural elements poking out of her pieces that deeply resonate with me on an almost spiritual level. I see Lee's work almost as if I was seeing inside my own self, I recognise myself in it, and that's a wonderful feeling.

There is a very clear repetition on Lee's work and processes. The elements and materiality of her work repeats itself, as if she was telling a story from all angles possible so that we are not to miss any hidden side story. She's showing this to us as well as to herself, I am almost sure, because I have been here in terms of obsessing over a form, a colour, a theme. . . In Lee's case, from pure observation you cannot miss the circular shape/s and the industrial materiality in the work. There are clear nods here and there of humanoid features like teeth, mouths, dismembered limbs. A whole universe and story in each piece.

The circle, a universal shape, yet so particular depending on who is to show us its curves. Starting and ending, all the time, all at the same point and in Lee's work also portals into another dimension.

I hugely encourage you to look more of Lee's work and about her life as she was a very unique woman that isolated herself in order to be with her work, disregarding fame or success even working prolifically and abundantly immersed in her own artistic search.
